ARM REDUCTION

What is arm reduction?

Arm reduction is aimed to help people with excess skin under the arm and on the inside of the upper arms, particularly after loss of large amount of weight. Though the arm muscles can be strengthened by exercising, unfortunately the excess skin often do not shrink back. This excess skin has to be surgically removed.

Details of the operation

Anaesthesia - General anaesthesia (you are asleep) or local anaesthesia (numbing injections)

Type of incision The scars are kept on the inside of the arm where they are not easily noticeable.

Length of the operation  1-2 hours, depending on the amount of tissue to be removed.

Length of stay this is done as a day case and you should be able to go home once the procedure is done.

Recovery -Return to work and light activities  usually 1-2 weeks.

Return to full activities  usually 3-4 weeks.

Possible complications -All surgical procedures carry a small risk of complications. For an arm reduction the complications can be bleeding, infection, slow healing and fluid collection. A detailed explanation will be given at the time of the consultation.

I will explain the procedure and recovery in full details including possible complications. I will also make sure you understand everything and answer all your questions.

The fee for the initial consultation is £100. I do not charge for any subsequent clinic appointments, before or after surgery.

Aftercare

I will arrange for a change of dressing at one week and see you typically at two weeks.

You will need to wear some support for 6 weeks after surgery to get the best result.

You will also need to look after the scar to help it settle for the first few months  I will give you detailed instructions about this.

If you have any problems or queries, please ring my number and/or the hospital.
